Zermatt is the ultimate Alpine ski destination... some would even say that if you haven't visited Zermatt by age 50 you've obviously failed in life. 😉
Zermatt is a small and picturesque village in the Swiss Alps, one of the most famous in the world. With the largest and highest winter sports domain in the Alps (it climbs from 1620m to 3882m altitude) Zermatt can promise snow year-round. In Zermatt you can live the dream of skiing and snowboarding 365 days a year! Of course in summer the domain is limited to 21km of open pistes, compared with 360km in wintertime, but as any ski junkie can attest it's more than enough to get your fix!
A little-known fact is that the alpine meadows around Zermatt have been inhabited for over 6000 years, and just 2000 years ago there wasn't even a glacier here! The skiing can't have been great, but the climate allowed instead for vinyards and winemaking... proving that the locals were already masters of the après-ski!
As you might expect the scenery in Zermatt is simply breathtaking. The Matterhorn looms in the background... mystical and majestic, the archetype of the perfect mountain. Its jagged silhouette, like a giant's tooth, pierces the sky alone on the horizon. The emblem of the Valais and by extension of Switzerland (and even a certain chocolate), the Matterhorn is the most photographed mountain in the world!
Zermatt also has a long tradition of independent hotels: the majority of hotels are family-run and not affiliated with any of the big corporate chains. For generations the owners have offered weary travellers a warm welcome and a comfortable stay.
For example, the Hotel Ambassador Zermatt, one of our favourites. Comfortable. Spacious. Welcoming. Close to the rail station and the town centre, the Ambassdor is ideal for families or groups. Whether you're looking to relax and enjoy the pool and sauna, or to head out and explore the mountain landscape, the Ambassador is there to offer you a warm and friendly welcome. Clean and tidy, it's a perfect example of Swiss excellence, Made in Zermatt.
You can also find other great independent hotels in Zermatt on BookBedder, for example:
